What is police health insurance?
Police Health insurance (Police Health) is private health insurance for police, police union and association employees and their families.
It's different from many funds because it offers only Gold-level cover*. It means our members receive top quality cover, high rebates, broad choice and a truly personal service, all at a cost that delivers excellent value for money.
Also, Police Health delivers all of this specifically for those in the police community.
Who is Police Health for?
Police Health is the not-for-profit health fund for the policing community and their families, since 1935.
Our eligibility extends further than you think. We proudly offer our cover to more of the policing community than ever before.
This includes current and retired members of the force, current and former employees, as well as volunteers.
Police officers and police employees
Current, retired or former police officers of Australian state, territory or federal police departments can take out police health insurance.
You can look after yourself with many extras such as physiotherapy, optical and mental health support.
Plus, you can always add hospital cover that has no excess, exclusions or restrictions.
Partners and families
Our great cover also extends to more people than you think. Those who are close relations of a current or former Police Officer, Employee or Volunteer can also join Police Health, including:
- Children
- Grandchildren
- Siblings

Why choose Police Health over other health insurance?
As a not-for-profit fund, our members needs are our priority. Our health insurance is designed around police shift work and family needs.
We also keep it simple by offering only 3 carefully designed cover options*. You don't have to compare dozens of different options, just pick from one of the below;
- Rolling Extras
- Up to 80% back at your choice of provider
- Rollover unused limits from the prior year
- Higher limits on the things you need most
- Gold Hospital
- No excess
- No co-payment
- No exclusions
- Unlimited ambulance
- Gold Combined
- Everything covered under Gold Hospital
- Everything covered under Rolling Extras
- Additional benefits for corrective laser eye surgery
This makes it easier to plan your health cover needs because you know what's included and avoid fewer unexpected costs.
How police health insurance is simple
With only 3 cover options to choose from, Police Health is simple from the beginning. That extends further with how our cover works.
Rolling Extras
Our Rolling Extras allows you to better manage your wellbeing, by claiming a portion of the cost of your regular healthcare appointments that aren't covered by Medicare.
Get more from dental
Root Canal, Simple and Surgical Extractions and Periodontic treatment are covered under General Dental, with no annual limit*, rather than Major Dental like most other funds.
This means your Major Dental category is not exhausted by these services and is available if you need more complex dental services.
Revolutionary Limit Rollover
Our Rolling Extras cover lets you roll over unclaimed Annual Limits from one calendar year to the next on most Extras services.
For example, if you didn’t claim on Optical last year, your $350 limit would rollover into this year, and you could claim up to $700 on Optical.*
Choose where you want to go
We don’t have a preferred provider network, as long as the provider is recognised by us, on most Extras you will get up to 80% back, up to the item limit.*
Gold hospital
For hospital cover with no surprises, Gold Hospital has no exclusions for Medicare listed procedures. You will also benefit from our healthy living programs and generous benefits on health aids and appliances.*
No excess or co-payments
When you have Police Health Gold Hospital, you also have the added benefit of no excess and co-payments when you do go to hospital.*
While some funds don’t offer any lower than $750 Excess, we’re committed to help you better manage your costs when you need it most.
Cover for aids and appliances
Enjoy benefits towards continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) Machines and Non-surgically Implanted Items and Appliances such as Insulin Pumps, Prosthetic Eye (Non-implant), External Breast Prothesis, Pressure Garments, Ankle or Knee Brace, Custom Footwear.*
Unlimited ambulance
Police Health members are covered with100% Ambulance cover for emergency transport, clinically required non-emergency transport and treatment not requiring transport (Subject to waiting periods and other conditions).
This means you can save around $900, depending on your state or territory.
What does Police Health Insurance cost?
Like all health insurance, Police Health's cover is based on a range of factors, including;
- Cover type (hospital, extras or combined)
- The state or territory you live in
We make it simple by only offering 3 options, which helps make healthcare costs more predictable.
With clear inclusions across hospital and extras cover, members can plan ahead for everyday health needs like dental, physio and optical, and feel more confident about what’s covered if hospital treatment is needed.
Because everyone’s situation is different, the best way to understand the cost is to get a personalised quote.
