Looking beyond Ozempic and Wegovy

While Police Health members can claim for the popular medications Ozempic and Wegovy, there may be other ways to use your health cover to help manage type 2 diabetes and your weight.

How do they work and why are they popular?

Ozempic, containing the active ingredient semaglutide, works by mimicking a natural hormone called GLP-1, which plays a role in regulating blood sugar and appetite.

So it's not surprising that this relatively easy way to manage type 2 diabetes and obesity is appealing.

History

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved Ozempic for type 2 diabetes in 2019, and the TGA approved Wegovy in August 2024.

In 2022 the use of Ozempic boomed as more and more Australians used it for weight loss, not type 2 diabetes, and you can expect similar results for Wegovy.

  • Personalised online self-monitoring and tracking system (phone/mail alternative available if you don’t have internet access)
  • Two-way personal motivation, support and guidance through phone, SMS, email, message board and posted communication by a central care support team of healthcare professionals and program navigators

The Prima Heart Health Program helps manage weight-related risk factors to improve daily living and lower overall risk of heart problems.

It focuses on modifiable risk factors, like weight and diet to reduce cardiac risk.

The program runs in 3 phases over 18 weeks, and each six-week phase has its own;
