There are very good reasons why Police Health doesn't cover gym memberships (read more on our FAQ page). But don’t worry the alternative options for members are even better.

Going to the gym is Australia’s second most popular sporting activity with 4 million Australians regularly participating in 2023.

Given the physical demands of many policing roles, it's no surprise that we're often asked whether Police Health covers gym memberships.

While we don't cover gym memberships, Police Health continues to be a trusted partner in health and wellbeing in the policing community.

That goes beyond supporting our members (when they go to hospital), it's also about helping members be proactive in looking after their health.

If possible, prevention is always better than treatment. So, what options do Police Health members have?

Exercise physiology

An Exercise Physiologist can help you improve your overall health. They also support patients by treating medical conditions through exercise.

An Exercise Physiologist understands the human body and the benefits that exercise can have on it – for all parts, mentally and physically.

They know how to use exercise to improve the musculoskeletal system, as well as the cardiovascular and endocrine systems. Exercise is used as both prevention and rehabilitation methods.

From Pilates to gym-based exercise routines, an Exercise Physiologist can assist with treating all types of conditions including obesity, arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, asthma and cardiovascular diseases, as well as many other conditions.

It can also be helpful to see an Exercise Physiologist when you are first getting back in to exercise after an injury, health episode or procedure, or after having a baby.

Exercise physiology group sessions

Our cover includes exercise physiology group sessions, a cost-effective way to complete supervised and safe exercise programs which are individually designed for each participant.

Depending on your individual needs you could be completing an exercise program which works to improve your cardiovascular fitness, strength, bone density, balance, or any combination of these.
