Rollover Benefit explained...

The Rollover Benefit scheme covers most extras services, such as dental and physiotherapy, and gives members more flexibility in using their limits.

This is great news for those of you who don’t use all your entitlements in one year, only to find you need more than your share the following year.

Your benefits are first paid from the annual maximum of the year relating to the date of the service being claimed. This means that for any services received in 2007, your annual maximum for 2007 must be used before any unused annual maximum from 2006 is called on.

Eligibility for Rollover Benefits comes after just 12 months membership with Police Health.

Some examples of how this new scheme works:

For example, Bill has Platinum Health cover and can claim up to $750 of physiotherapy benefits each calendar year. In 2006, he had no claims for physiotherapy but in 2007 he injured his back and needed 30 visits to his physiotherapist, charged at $48 each. This adds up to $1,440 in fees. Normally, his benefits with Police Health, paying $38.40 each visit, would have stopped at $750. But as he had no claims in 2006, all of his visits in 2007 are claimable, that’s an extra $402!

Likewise, Jane, who has been a member for many years, hasn’t claimed any benefit for major dental services. However in 2007, she discovers that she needs two crowns, costing her $2,250. With 80 percent coverage, this means she will claim $1,800. While she will use her annual maximum of $1,200 this year, she can also use her unclaimed annual maximum from 2006, giving her access to another $1,200 of available benefits. Even after the full $1,800 was refunded for the crowns, Jane still has $600 left for another major dental services that she may need in 2007 and that is added peace of mind.

But remember as Jane has used all of her $1,200 annual maximum for 2007, there is no unused maximum available to roll over to 2008.

The table below shows another way of looking at how the Rollover Benefit works for members over a number of years using Physiotherapy as an example.
